Rating my rides: My favorite was Mick’s Ride

Anne, Ingrid, and Linda on the last day of the DALMAC at Good Hart.

It was a summer and fall filled with weekend bike rides. More than a 1,000 miles worth! Thanks to the League of Michigan Bicyclists and its excellent ride calendar for identifying plenty of riding options.

With the exception of my first ride when it rained, each has been enjoyable. The rain did have an upside: there was sense of accomplishment when I made it back to my car, soaked and dirty.

But my overall favorite was the Mick Webster Memorial Tour in June. The route took us through great scenery that included lakes in Jackson County. And when you miss a few turns, you get to see even more of nature’s beauty! It was a surprising hill-filled workout that kept us pedaling long and strong.

That’s also where Ingrid and I made friends with fellow rider, Linda. (A highlight of our riding season was when we all met in Good Hart on the final day of the DALMAC and rode together into Mackinac City.)

The last leg was along the Falling Water Trail. A paved trail was a treat. We rolled along at a good clip, didn’t have to contend with traffic, and the terrain offered a welcome respite from the hills we tackled earlier.

My lunchtime buddy after the Jackson ride.

When we arrived back in Jackson, an awesome homemade lunch was waiting at P and T Fitness.  The cutest corgi ever was in the bike shop, and I couldn’t resist watching him run after his ball, bring it back to me, and nose it over so I could throw it again.

But most of all, this was a ride where you could really feel the love for Mick Webster. From the volunteers at the stops to everyone at the bike shop. She was obviously a special person.  The ride webpage says:

Mick passed away May 17th, 2006, after a six-year battle with malignant melanoma. This ride was started to celebrate her life and to raise money for her favorite cause, The Relay For Life.

I’ll be back next year, ready to tackle the 100k route this time.
