The excitement meter is beginning to build. T-minus 12 days until I embark on the longest multi-day bike tour yet, the seven-day Shoreline West. It’s a ride sponsored by the League of Michigan Bicyclists, and I know from previous rides the group does an outstanding job of organization and ensuring a hefty dose of fun and enjoyment.
Already logged more than 1,000 miles on the new bike. Ready to hit the road.
The ride
We launch from Montague and will follow the Lake Michigan coastline to Ludington, Frankfort, Traverse City, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs and Mackinaw City.
No doubt this will be one breath-taking ride with some dandy hills along the way.
The gear
The packing has commenced. Seven days of riding. Seven nights of camping. The camping … Not so excited about.
I did survive two DALMAC tours that included camping. But that was three nights. Did I mention this is seven nights? In a tent?
Started packaging my clothes and supplies so I don’t have the duffel bag of disaster. Gotta love that there’s a plastic bag in every size for all my needs.
When my plastic bags are assembled I will further organize them into even larger bags. Will be making the most of the two 45-pound bags I’m allowed. That’s both good and bad.
Packing power
Of course I will have the necessities: tubes, tire, rain gear, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. New this year: a portable charger.
With so many biking accessories needing charging and recharging, the portable power source can be a life-saver on the road. Hats off to Lorna for her great idea.
My phone is far from new. For every day use, it’s perfectly fine. In Northern Michigan, where cell coverage can be spotty, the battery is challenged. Sometimes almost dead.
This year I’ll have my portable charger in my bag. When we stop for lunch, I’ll plug it in, rest and relax, and we’ll both be ready to go.
Until then, I’m counting the days and filling my bags.
Sounds like great fun. Do tell: what are you using as your portable charger? Thinking of getting one m’self.
I have something called an EC Tech. Two USB ports. Should be just what I need. Lots to choose from, that’s for sure.
